Indie pop group Amy Lou’s new self-proclaimed ‘choon’ was released on Friday19th January. Fronted by Amy Louise Rogers, the band’s debut single ‘Chania’ was released in October last year to critical acclaim being endorsed by the likes of Jim Gellatly and various online music publishers (such as ourselves at Discovery Music – check out our review here). Now, with a host of performances already lined up for 2019, Amy Lou are preparing to unveil their new, aptly oary (or Scottish for those unfamiliar with the word) titled single ‘Fiat 5 Hunner’ with all guns blazing.
The track opens with Amy’s vocals along with a jangle-laden guitar providing an idyllic, mellow portrait to the track before after thirty seconds, a brief burst from Amy’s vocals along with drums momentarily prelude the introduction of the full band which brings a rise of colour and dynamic to the earlier idyllic scene approaching the pre-chorus and chorus sections.
Refreshingly delivered in her natural Scottish accent - arguably something we don’t see enough of in new Scottish music - Amy tells a story of a relationship she has been in involved in and some of the difficulties that have surrounded it whilst whole-heartedly proclaiming a yearning for resolution and for such disputes in the relationship to work out. The chorus lines in particular indicate this longing for resolve – ‘maybe we can make things easier / maybe we can turn it all around’ – along with lines in the second verse indicating some of the relatable hardships faced with the relationship – ‘when I’m pre-planning, proposing, everything I say comes out in stutters, like the scratches on your vinyl’.
Packed into three-minutes, ‘Fiat 5 Hunner’ is a bold follow up from Amy Lou indicating a strong statement of intent from the band and their potential for further success in the year ahead. With gigs at renowned Scottish venues such as Sneaky Pete’s (Edinburgh), King Tut’s (Glasgow) and a hemotwon gig at Dunfermline’s PJ Molloy’s already lying ahead for Amy Lou, it looks as if that further potential for success is already coming to fruition.
