THE VANITIES / 'Adult Essence' / Single Review 20/08/18

Updated: Sep 18, 2018

The glorious city of Glasgow is no stranger to producing prestigious punk sounds, dating right back to the late 70s the crazy underground scene has grown and flourished, satisfying our souls. The Vanities are an energetic, relatively fresh faced band who are already making their mark on the famously historic scene. Finally we have been given their first single release produced by Baby Strange's Johnny Madden.

'Adult Essence' brutally captures the aches and pains of growing up. Taking note of teenage experiences, the band has managed to add a chaotic sound influenced heavily by bands like Sex Pistols and Buzzcocks to accompany the awakening lyrics. 'Why is it so hard to get by?' is sang electrifyingly with spinning guitar riffs in the background, this anthem really depicts how youths feel and overreact making it a song that's easy to relate to. I think of relationships during adolescence in particular when I hear this tune, whether those are romantic or family relationships, and the struggles that come along with them.

I'm really not surprised at the reaction and attention this new single has received as it's not hard to tell how much effort has been poured into it! After headlining King Tuts summer nights and playing Broadcast recently the boys have gained a huge amount of praise and success, they are ready to embark on a little Scottish tour with This Feeling next month!
