After writing a short gig review to get you guys excited about the launch gig for 'The Roques' new single I thought it was very relevant to then go on and review the track when we were given pre-release access to it. The name 'The Roques' has popped up so many times in my relatively short career of writing these reviews, the five piece band from Dundee are clearly doing something right to be gaining this much attention. The release shindig will take place tonight (15/06) at Beat Generator in Dundee with support coming from some of the Dundee's finest.
The track itself gets off to a very ambient start with what sounds like some bowed guitar that wouldn't be out of place on a Sigur Ros album. However, this ambience is short lived as the bass kicks in with a very steady down strum sounding riff and a shaker sound that only compliments this slightly distorted bass. The vocals kick in on top of this bass and shaker combo with heavy effects added, the voice and effect combination is reminiscent to something the 'Arctic Monkeys' could have released before their most recent album of hotel lobby music. Once the guitars kick in this effect on the vocals is lifted and it seems like metaphorically opening a tap to let more energy flow from the track. After listening to the song several times over on repeat I noticed that the whole thing seems to be built upon just three chords, whether you are a fan of this writing technique or think it is rather lazy the band have undoubtedly created a fantastic piece of work using bear minimum foundations which to me is rather impressive.
For all our Dundee readers, get yourself along to Beat Generator tonight and join the release party, and be sure to check out the track which is available on all major streaming platforms.
