SINGLE REVIEW | The Roques - 'Fear Me' | 01/02/19

I’m always happy to write about Dundee’s stars. The Roques are a well-known five-piece with a unique Indie-rock sound that’s taken them all across the country. They debuted last year with their hit What Do You See? which has a staggering 30,000 streams to this day. I have been awaiting the chance to review these guys for a while and I’m glad to debut my love for these guys with their latest track, Fear Me, a murderously good track.

The intro to this song is hypnotic and stirs something mighty. It also made my guinea pig growl, so thank you boys for giving my pet anger issues. I don’t know what I love more - the flittering drum beat, slight pang on guitar, leading into sultry reverberations from the lead vocalist, the opening eponymous lyric “you gotta fear me” said in such an undeniable way – but within the first few seconds of the song I immediately adore it, so job well done. Confidence and might is embedded in this track. The lyrics are laden with demands to the listener that give this song a strong edge.

There is a persistent arousal of energy and malice to this track in the way the best rock songs induce. The chorus continues the subversive tone of dangerous power conveyed by each member of the band working together excellently. The lyrics are fantastically horrific and tell so many stories at once: “crying through your eyes you start to bleed. Lying face to face in the dark; let me take you back to the start.”

More commands come forth, with just as much easy authority. This song feels like an old story about wolves in the forest and undying kings, and gives me the same kind of chill. Following a repeat from the chorus, a slum of silence, with a consistent head-nodder of a guitar tune to keep the spirits up and the emotions spiked. This bridge develops from the quiet fury to in-your-face and undeniable might with a swell of noise from the drums and guitar all rising to a din before the vocalist comes back with a punch to the amazing chorus. The chorus serves as a contrasting vulnerability to the threats of the verses, but each verse and repeat of chorus is just as authentic and equally strong. The song ends with a deliciously smooth guitar solo and fantastic support from the rest of the band, and a final command – much less a demand and much more an acceptance – “you gotta fear me.”

This song is absolute rock. Anger and desire all conveyed in controlled tones from each member of the band. This track demands fear and alongside that I give respect. To see such an evolution in such a short amount of time is staggering and exciting: Big up, boys, let’s see more.

Fear Me by the Roques releases Friday, February 1st. You can follow the boys on Facebook, and make sure to check out some of the lead guitarist Jamie Wilde’s writings for Discovery music.
