On Wednesday I was invited along to Perth UHI to a drum clinic run by The Echo Lab. Now don’t be mistaken, I am not a drummer, I have two left feet and two right hands. However, I have always taken a keen interest in the work that Charlotte Bibby and Kerr McCall do at The Echo Lab.
The Drum Clinic was a Q & A session on Drums with Charlotte Bibby (The Echo Lab), Victoria Smith (Soulwax) and Dave Major (Dave Major Music & Tuition). The aim of the drum clinic was to empower young people to start drumming and to also share tips and tricks with drummers alike ultimately to promote growth and career paths in the industry.
The Echo Lab have been doing some incredible work since their beginnings in November 2017 including Music Taster Sessions, Adult Rock ‘N’ Roll Sessions, workshops and continued tuition. It's fantastic to see two young people start a business in music to promote participation, collaboration and accessibility not only to experienced musicians but to children and school leavers.
I caught up with Kerr after the clinic to ask him about future work with The Echo Lab and why these clinics are important:
“The Spotlight sessions are really important for inspiring and motivating young musicians outside of the normal format of a one to one lesson. We find that the sessions give young people a deep and encouraging insight into all the different career paths they can go down with music and at the same time inspire them to quite simply pick up their instrument and play, which for us as The Echo Lab, is what it’s all about. We’ll definitely be holding more Spotlight Sessions with different focuses ranging from: Guitar, Bass, Singing, Songwriting, Creative Processes, Studio Recording, Live Performance etc. And currently, have several of these being arranged for later this year. On top of these sessions, we’ll be holding our regular Music Workshops for musicians of varying skill levels throughout the year. Charlotte and I really love doing what we do and helping to inspire young people to create in any way possible. It’s a lot of work with the workshops, spotlight sessions, lessons and music production, but we enjoy every aspect of it and the opportunities that each event brings outweigh the large amount of work put in!”
The Echo Lab seeks to empower musicians, young and old. A music business developed by Charlotte Bibby and Kerr McCall to improve access to guidance, tuition and collaboration opportunities in music. Join in on The Echo Lab’s social media channels for future events, clinics and workshops and give them some well-deserved love!
