Dundee based two piece St.Martiins darted into the Scottish music scene during 2018 as an unexpected force but one which is sure not to leave for a long time, the release of their latest single “Want God” perfectly aligns with their supporting slot for Cigarettes After Sex in Edinburgh as well as as headline show in Glasgow’s iconic Nice and Sleazy’s on June 5th.
“Want God” was released on May 31st and after less than two weeks it has snuck its way into my frequent rotation with haunting lyrics about faith and anxiety contrasted with dirty guitar tones. The duo has listed artists such as Snail Mail and The Cure as influences on their work which can be heard clearly on the track with poetic synths and angelic, almost choir like, female vocals.
Their unique style of spacey pop leaves an impression on the listener and leaves you craving more with layers of intricacy that is woven perfectly by the mixing of Scotty Anderson. St.Martiins once described themselves as “cheap and dirty” and while elements of that are on the track I would like to see them experiment with a less clean sound despite this however the bands upcoming set at Glasgow’s Tenement Trail festival on October 12th cannot be missed.
The single “Want God” is currently available on Apple Music and Spotify
