SINGLE REVIEW | THE ACID CLUB - 'GETAWAY'

The Acid Club are a fledgling band with members hailing from across central Scotland, between West Lothian and Dundee. Having only formed in early 2019, the trio consisting of Ross Murray, Sam Rigby and Aaron Fraser have been grafting hard to produce their impressive debut single ‘Getaway’. Released on the 6th September, ‘Getaway’ is accompanied by B-side track ‘Dreams’ and together, they introduce the bands’ fresh sounds.

The opener of this exciting first release from the young band is strong and punky. ‘Getaway’ begins with soaring stereo sounds that immediately caught my attention; I was ready to hear an energetic rocking track. Thankfully, it explodes into fast paced guitar and thumping drums. With similar sounds to the Buzzcocks or The View, ‘Gateaway’ is full of electricity which sparks right through the verses and into the chorus. The lead vocals are menacing, giving the tune a deep and dangerous side. The lyrics growl out dreams of escaping and no doubt will resonate with those feeling trapped or boxed in, ready to get away. The track features a charged guitar solo which accelerates into bursting drums. Performed live, you can guarantee there will be animated mosh pits worth throwing yourself into.

The B-side track, titled ‘Dreams’, is an almost complete contrast to the fiery energy in ‘Getaway’. The softly strummed guitar chord changes are as melancholy as they are peaceful. Stripped away from the loud sounds of the previous track, the vocals on ‘Dreams’ are harsh and honest. This track is whimsical and heavy-hearted at the same time. It shows The Acid Club are not a one sound band and have more to offer as they continue to experiment with genres.

The band played their first gig on Friday 13th in the capital. Edinburgh’s Opium saw them support The Links alongside The Fences. You can catch them live next on the 20th September hosted by the St. Andrews Indie Music Society.
