Much like Superfood, Foals and Franz Ferndinand, you really need to add the word 'band' after Quiche when searching for them online to get the results you're after. Fortunately, this is where the difficulty ends, as the psychedelic pop five-piece from Glasgow have released another single that's as perfectly dreamy as their last recent endeavours.
Quiche are fairly new on the ever-thriving Glasgow music scene, and just one listen of their previous release Come on Down makes it clear that their influences lie in the summery surf-rock genre, perfected by bands such as The Drums and Circa Waves. However, their latest release Grey Matter sees the psych-pop outfit become much more sure of themselves and their growth in assurance and confidence is extremely clear. The influences are still there, but in this case they've taken small parts of inspiration and weaved them together with their own capability, creating a summery masterpiece.
Surf-pop guitar riffs scattered throughout the track bring an instant pang of summer nostalgia, and they make you feel like you should be on sunny beach (even though it's always cold in Scotland, with yellow storm warnings never more than a few days away). Nevertheless, the lyrics "But it's fine / I'll take my time" right at the beginning convey that this is going to be an easy listen, immediately transporting you to better, sunnier times.
The harmonic vocals in the chorus bring to mind images of The Beach Boys, which further encapsulates the idea of a perfectly dreamy summer track, with just the right dash of nostalgia. The twangy guitars perfectly compliment the straight and steady drum beat, and, just like Grey Matter itself, it's hard to pin down what exactly makes this track so flawless- it's a mix of a lot of elements, but it's easy to tell it's been painstakingly thought through and carried out.
If you want to catch Quiche live before the year is out, fear not- they're playing at Tenement Trail, one of Glasgow's favourite multi-venue festivals, in October this year in its new home of the East End.
