Shock and Awe is the debut single from West Coast pysch-rockers Major League Chemicals, who, get a solid 10/10 for their name alone.
Singer Liam Russell sounds like his Courteener's front man namesake, Liam Fray, and that, if I am being completely honest (and I am) is not a bad thing. The single on the other hand falls a bit flat for me.
When the single begins, it feels as if you've walked into the middle of something, and I found myself restarting the single, as I thought I had accidentally fast forwarded to the middle of the song.
This, combined with the breakdown that doesn't quite match the overall chilled out vibe of this song, left me in shock, but sadly not in awe. That being said, the crescendo the song reaches at this point is a nice change of pace, even if it does feel a little unwelcome in this particular song.
This bunch of lads have potential, and I can imagine them doing great things in the future, but with all honesty, this single just wasn't for me. In saying that I am looking forward to hearing what Major League Chemicals release next, to see if they can surprise me, and pull a psych-rock banger out the bag.
