The wait was finally over and I could barely contain my excitement, from the minute this was announced I just knew I had to be there after catching Heavy Rapids when they played in Dundee a couple of months ago. And with a line up with 2 new bands for me to experience it was sure to be a great one.
Up first were The Vanities, now unfortunately due to transport issues we missed them. But if after catching them at Conroy’s Basement the week before, check our review of that HERE, so I can say for certain they would have been class and hopefully I can catch them again soon.
Next up were Gallus the first of the 2 new bands for me. They are a five-piece indie-rock band and seemed to be somewhat of Glasgow legends bringing with them a barrage of fans and its clear to see why. With a class hard hitting set with great tunes such as their latest single “Split”, a fantastic classic indie-rock tune that gets you up and dancing. They certainly know how to put on a show too, any set which ends up with all the band members with their t-shirts off is proof, with great audience interactions and just a clear love for performing they truly were a class act. A band I surely will see more of in the future and I’m looking forward to it.
The next was Snash the second new band for me. A heavier band than what I usually listen to but a pleasant surprise, an insight for me into other genres and I enjoyed it. With catchy lyrics in tunes such as “White out” and hard-hitting lead guitar they had even the lesser of punk lovers’ heads bobbing along and enjoying themselves. Their latest single “Drag you down” was greeted with a rapturous applause from the increasing G2 audience. After Snash’s set I was left disappointed, in myself that is, as I found out they had played Tenement Trail at the end of September and I never caught their set. Again, another band to add to my never-ending playlist of local bands and talent.
Finally, the headline band Heavy Rapids. For months this was in the calendar and it was finally here with the anticipation building I managed to weasel my way to the front to fully experience the Heavy Rapids and I certainly got that. For this being their first ever headliner it was a great showcase for their professionalism and how well polished they have become since first catching them supporting Rascalton in Dundee. Playing smashing tunes like “Crying Shame” with its punch bass line and heavy punk vocals and also probably my personal favourite tune “Stuck with” which brings a more indie/rock feel to the band, showing their versatility and well-roundedness and its clear to see the crowd agreed with me. With energy and limbs flying everywhere it was difficult not to get caught up in the passion and love people had for the music being created and obviously Dillon felt the same diving head first into a chaotic mosh pit and joining in on the bedlam. In all this may have been Heavy Rapids’ first ever headliner but it is definitely the first of many and a bright, prosperous road is ahead of them.
This was a fantastic gig with and equally fantastic sold out crowd to match and a great display of local music and the local scene. If you find yourself in Glasgow one weekend, I highly recommend you check out the local scene you WILL be better for it.
