GIG REVIEW | The Vaccines @ MotherWell Civic Centre | 30.01.19

Updated: Feb 4, 2019

A venue resembling a school gym hall, was filled with an audience of young excitable fans and a stage that was decorated with green plants, dim lighting and a banner spelling ‘The Vaccines’ in gold sequins, and it was soon to be home to an outrageously incredible gig.

Storming onto the stage to Queens’ ‘I Want to Break Free’ the band look on form and the anxious crowd are riled up within the first few notes of the song.

The Vaccines open with Your Love is My Favourite Band, a popular song from the bands most recent album ‘Combat Sports’. The night had barely began, and drinks were already being launched from every direction and people were climbing onto their pals shoulders.

I’ve seen the vaccines a fair few times, but this particular gig has stuck with me. The band had an amazing stage presence and the lead singer, Justin Young had a great relationship with the crowd, it was clear how much they love performing. This really contributed towards the overall atmosphere of the night, making it so much more enjoyable.

The band continued to play an exceptional set of new and old songs and singles, such as I Can’t Quit, I Always Knew and Post Break-up Sex. They played a slower song every now and then to allow a change of pace, and of course to give the audience to catch a breath from the riots they were creating.

The highlight of the gig for me was mid-set, Young began to urge the crowd to sing along to the next tune, you could already hear the recognisable first note of Wetsuit playing in the background and everyone was sharply preparing themselves for what was to come. It’s fair to say that the belting of Wetsuit, could’ve brought the venue to the ground. It was a moment that everyone wanted to be apart of.

Chaos erupted in the crowd with every song that was performed, especially the groups newest single All My Friends Are Falling In Love, which has quickly become one of The Vaccines most well-loved songs.

A couple songs down the line and it’s time for the band to say their goodbyes and play their final song, All in White. It was another sensational performance, and It was clear that although everyone was sweaty, bruised and battered, no one could quite get enough of The Vaccines tonight.
