GIG REVIEW | CHERRY GLAZERR @ STEREO

Updated: Apr 11, 2019

Vocalist and lead guitarist Clementine Creevy

California slack-rockers Cherry Glazerr made their long-awaited return to Glasgow on Monday, playing to a packed-out crowd at Stereo. Having played last time in 2017 to a tiny crowd in Broadcast's famous basement, my first thought was this- would they be able to replicate the same energy that comes so easily in smaller venues? And they certainly did not disappoint. With a stage set-up of giant inflatable cherries, and visuals that were both fun to watch yet slightly creepy (giant baby doll's dismembered head, anyone?), Creevy and co. burst on to the stage, soundtracked by LCD Soundsystem, and launched into Ohio, the opening track from their latest album, Stuffed & Ready.

They treated the audience to a setlist of old and new favourites, including the sugar-sweet Teenage Girl, to which they added an exhilarating metal addition at the end. Nurse Ratched and White's Not My Colour This Evening really livened up the crowd, which was admittedly rather stagnant for the first couple of songs. This all changed when Creevy started snaking her way into the crowd while singing, holding hands with anyone lucky enough to be in her way. For the encore, she crawled her way back on to the stage like a feral cat before diving straight into a cover of LCD Soundsystem's Time To Get Away (complete with cowbells) and dancing around the inflatables like she was having the time of her life. And the set closer, Told You I'd Be With The Guys, was the perfect way to end the night- the punchy guitars accompanied by Creevy's shrieks perfectly indicated just how far they'd come in terms of live performance from just a couple of years before.

Having lost their synth player Sasami Ashworth to her own endeavours recently, they were back to being a three-piece. But this isn't a downgrade by any means- together they all harnessed a perfect on-stage chemistry, making their turbulent yet polished songs a real pleasure to witness.
