Fresh from one of the best-named bands around, “Billy Evertyeen” is the standout tune from Flux
Velociraptor’s latest EP, “Velociraptor Attractor”, and showcases this instrumental outift's innovative
and unique approach to song writing.
The three piece hesitantly describes themselves as belonging to the genre of math rock or prog rock, and there are clear reasons why these terms have been tossed around during discussions regarding the band. On Billy Everyteen, for example, the bass, guitar and drums seem to amble through several different time signatures, often different to one another, which shows the talent present within the group; it is a feat of song writing to pull this together into a cohesive sound, a feat which is often overlooked or dismissed.
Their dark, dirty sound, however, encourages you to nod your head and tap your foot along even if
you don’t mean to, as Flux Velociraptor have managed to make this song accessible to more casual
listeners. This is important and impressive, as it means that some listeners can enjoy if they just hear
the song once or twice, and others can listen more and examine more deeply the complex rhythms
present in “Billy Everyteen”, picking apart the songs layers and indulging in the skill oozing throughout the song. This opens the door for a wider audience to discover and appreciate this band’s song writing.
Listening to the EP as a whole proves that Flux Velociraptor are not afraid to experiment with their
sounds, and given that they only have three instruments at their disposal, they manage to create an
incredibly diverse sonic soundscape whilst pertaining to their core sound. This means that, on
“Velociraptor Attractor”, the total is more than the sum of the individual parts, as whilst each song
itself is impressive, the way they all have similarities and also waver around a mainstay sound means that if you hear any one of these songs out of context, you will immediately recognise it as a Flux Velociraptor tune.
