Glaswegian producer Justin Case’s new EP is brought to you by local label Bricolage. When he’s not out performing he likes to spend his time making music in the studio. His sound is about crating ‘mood and a deep, hypnotic groove… those tracks that get you tapping your feet and nodding without realizing it’. ‘You Matter’ is a low-fi, glitch hop collection of songs that do just that.
‘1OfYou’ encapsulates you in those synth bass drum beats that resonate underneath a myriad of complex rhythmic interchanges. It draws you in in a trance like state in which you feel the beats in harmony with your own pulse. ‘Seagull’ is similarly successful in creating its own unique ambience. It’s much more upbeat with a feeling of moving forward, like a discovery into the unknown, but still brings you the comfort in knowing you’re headed the right way. The escapism that you might experience in this sub four-minute wonder is enough to make you feel contented.
The production and composition of the four tracks feels unwavering, and this continues with ‘Buffalo’ in which there’s an off-beat bass that gives that feel of anticipation. The track metamorphoses as samples float in and out, bouncing off one another but still working in tandem to unify the complexity Justin achieves.
The final track of the EP is ‘Napali’. It opens with a triplet feel, a little esoteric and cautious. Followed by a bold chorus that pounds on each fourth beat and with it launches an accented chord that overlaps with the next. It is beautifully entwined with so many layers of beats and harmonies that I find myself forgetting what I was going to write.
Whatever your take on electronic music, this EP is worth the experience. It will bring you a small oasis of calm to any hectic day and offer a much-needed pause from a racing mind. You can find more from Justin over on Soundcloud and for Bricolage’s other releases check out their page on Bandcamp.
