The Glenrothes trio, CXLVMBIA, have outdone expectations with their latest EP titled 'XV'. Combining possible influences from bands such as Blossoms and Muse, the Fife boys; Sam Bell, George Murray and David Anderson, have created something wonderful. Willingness to experiment with techniques and sounds has allowed the band to pull together this 5 track alt/pop rock epic that will have you tapping your foot, swaying your hips and banging your head.

The band's eloquent Spotify description simply reads “synths and riffs” which is exactly what you get from the opening track “I <3 U So”. The heavy 80s synths at the start of the track are accompanied by brooding riffs. Lead vocalist Sam Bell has a lot to offer, his saintly pop vocals are the perfect pair to the strong raw energy you get from the melody. CXLVMBIA have a knack for explosive solos and this first track is a tease at what is to come.

To my delight, the band have mastered the subtle segue indicating a change in pace. Track number two is a delicate piano interlude, displaying the musical talent and imagination within the band. Its wistful hum gently eases us in to the third track, “Broken”. The stretching guitar riff at the beginning of “Broken” is reminiscent of the guitar techniques used throughout Paul Simon's “Graceland”. The drum rhythm keeps the song alive, thumping gently like a heartbeat. It's a track that really tugs at you heartstrings. It builds up to an optimistic climax , beautifully displaying the range in Bell's vocals. A soul felt track like this one is rare on an EP with rock songs like the others, but certainly appreciated just as much.

“Moment” is the fourth track on the EP. It begins with twinkling synth sounds before bellowing into a dangerous drum beat and larger than life guitar riffs. The contrast between the delicate vocals and the menacing guitar creates something more than your average alt rock tune. The guitar solo featured in this song really blows you back, it's exhilarating. This song might be the most Blossom-influenced but it certainly punches through its own barriers.

The last track on the EP may just be my favourite. “Heaven” begins with a classic rock beat with a twang you wouldn't expect. The shimmer of a tambourine throughout the song is matched with more tantalising riffs. The moodiness of the track thumps on before building up, heading straight into a guitar solo demonstrating skill and ability. The song suddenly cuts to a single piano note before revving up to an enticing climax. Everything kicks in, including backing vocals which really add something extra to this already perfected track. A brilliant finale.

CXLVMBIA have already teased a video for “I <3 U So” and having played Sneaky's in Edinburgh earlier this month, there's no doubt the band have more gigs lined up. Make sure you keep your eyes peeled for more to come by checking out their socials via the links below.
