EP REVIEW | BAD HOMBRES- 'PROTEST AS YOU PLEASE'

At the moment, Glasgow’s rich and diverse music scene could be considered one of the best in the country. There’s no discrimination here- it’s a very welcoming bunch, which means we see new bands cropping up constantly, all bringing something new to the table. One such band that is at the forefront of the scene at the moment is Glasgow-based four piece Bad Hombres. Formed in 2017, their releases Manuel! and Yes Men have gained them a loyal following, and their newest release Protest As You Please is sure to satisfy their fans.

Carrying on the theme of political punk that is so prominent in their early singles, Bad Hombres have successfully put together a handful of songs both old and new. They really paint a picture of not only the sorry state of affairs that is the UK government, but the indifferent attitudes of the young working class that stand against it. The EP opens with Theresa On The Guillotine, which was originally released last year, but its catchy, swaggering guitar hook and angsty vocals make it the perfect opening track and leaves the listener eager to hear what’s to come.

Next up is Icarus, which has arguably the best guitar solo on the whole EP. Not only that, but the vocals that go alongside the creeping, moody build-up before the last chorus are outstanding, and the influence from Declan Welsh and Franz Ferdinand is clear. Don’t Panic Steven was their latest release, and is a humorous and clever nod to the infamous frontman of The Smiths- references of songs by the iconic 80s band are woven throughout. Last up is Trans Europe Café, which is a rock and roll love song at its best- the repetition of “I loved you from the start” paired with a head-banging bassline and distorted guitars is exhilarating, and ends the EP in the way it should- leaving the listener wondering both when they’re going to get the chance to catch them live, and when they’re releasing something new.

Good news- they’re playing a charity gig in support of Punk Against Poverty at the Priory on April 13. Keep an eye on their Facebook for any upcoming music news- you’re going to want to be the first to know when Bad Hombres release any new tunes.
