EP REVIEW | 808 CASINO | 'The 808 Casino, Vol.1'

The 808 Casino, Vol.1 is the perfect soundtrack to chilled out Autumn evenings. Multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer, Scott Beaton, has released new music with brand new project: ‘808 Casino’. Steering away from his solo material Scott’s new music is a contrast to the summer vibes from his last release, ‘In My Mind’, earlier this year. ‘The 808 Casino, Vol.1’, which was released on the 1st of October displays a range of inspiration, versatility and talent. Scott, who produces all his own tracks, hails from Scotland but has been playing his music further afield, with a gig in Dublin and a single launch in Texas earlier this year.

Beaton’s gravelly yet endearing vocals are introduced on the first track, titled ‘See the Light Dub (Soundcheck)’. It is an exploration of different sounds, against a gentle but distinctive dub backdrop. The track is well-rounded and interesting, with layers of instruments and several guitar playing techniques which walk you right through to the end.

The second track on the EP is a continuation of experimentation with sounds, Scott’s ability and willingness to play with different genres helps him to create something special. The start of ‘Reap What You Sow’ reminded me of an old Western, conjuring up the image of a lonely cowboy riding his horse across the desert at dusk. The sound of a sitar is introduced, and the tune takes an exciting turn. As the title suggests, the song lyrics continue a theme of dealing with our internal self and understanding our own struggles.

‘Rolling With the Times’ is the third track on the album, and has a more upbeat feeling from the previous song. The song is whimsical and unpredictable in the best way, with bongo drums that plod along before taking a slightly psychedelic leap at the end.

Lastly, we have ‘Looking for a Sign?’. This piano ballad gives off Elton John vibes. The main vocal track is supported by harmonies in the backing vocals, which gradually build up and are joined by clapping and cheerful piano playing. A nice number to round off this EP.

Based on this EP, I am looking forward to hearing what else will come from 808 Casino. Make sure to have a listen to the tracks on Spotify and be sure to follow Scott’s socials to keep up to date with all his music projects.
