Melbourne four-piece, City Calm Down are coming to Scotland this month and we can’t wait to cover it here at Discovery Music!

If you haven’t listened to City Calm Down before - what are you waiting for?! Their sound creates this authentic vibe where you’d expect to hear on a movie soundtrack. Their single, ‘Rabbit Run Away’, which is one of the first songs I listened to, totally uplifts you...that type of song that just lets you zone out from reality for a bit!

With a newly released album, Television ahead of their September/ October UK tour, the band have had an exciting year! This is just the start for what’s to come for the indie alternative band.

‘Television’, the first track on the album with the same name is an upbeat statement about our generation’s media.

With the lyrics, ‘Television, you‘re on my mind. Mute the truth just show me a good time.’

The single suggests the propaganda behind our society’s media and that we aren’t being shown the whole truth. It’s an interesting topic and a great influence for a single. It’s the type of song that makes people stop for a minute to think and a great indicator for the rest of the album.

The album continues to have influence over modern society‘s issues. Take ’Visions of Graceland‘ for instance, it tackles the daily struggles of life choices: a tragic job, feeling stuck and alone which all comes down to not knowing what you want from life. A feeling I’m sure a lot of us can relate to in this day and age.

Whilst listening to the album, tracks such as Mother, Cut the Wires and Weatherman all stood out for me. Every song on ‘Television’ has it‘s own unique style which makes it gripping for the listener.

My favourite single of the album, however, has to be New Year’s Eve. As a huge fan of alternative 80s rock, this song just totally stood out for me! The track has a huge influence from British bands such as The Cure, Echo and The Bunnymen and Joy Division. A track completely different to the rest of the album, showing the talent and variety, City Calm Down have for songwriting. It’s so rare nowadays to find a song so alike to that older genre of music especially from an Australian band!

Their influence doesn’t just stem from British alternative rock though, fans of The National, The War on Drugs and Frightened Rabbit will love them too!

After listening to ’Television’ in full, I cannot wait to see how the band are live. With a huge fan base in Melbourne, I can’t wait to see them tackle the UK!

City Calm Down take on the Oran Mor in Glasgow on the 25th September and if you’re up for discovering one of the most exciting upcoming bands of the year then we’ll see you there!
