Beta Waves, as it sounds, are a synth-pop, new wave-esque duo whose style is very hard to pinpoint but undoubtedly some of the best music to be released this year on the Scottish music scene. They not only know how to compose great tracks but the content of their songs is cleverly written. ‘Love, Love, Love’ is the new track set to come out this Friday, 27th July.
Where to even start with this new single from Beta Waves… There’s nothing more satisfying than finding a track that you can stick on repeat, and with each replay you get that same, deep in your heart euphoric fulfilment of epic proportions. ‘Love, Love, Love’ is a recapitulation of synth dreams from big names such as LCD Soundsystem. It reeks of finesse. The traditional synth piano melodic patterns are simple yet effective: they bounce between your ears like a statement of intent. All the while you are soothed by the pulsing, retro sound-waves that paint the backbeat of the track. It’s a beautiful combination of a punchy chorus and subtle verses that drift in and out between classic clapping samples.
With a title like that, this is not what you expect. This is not a cheesy love story but more of a deep, heartfelt piece of self-understanding and exploration of human emotion. The guitar feature is a solid addition to the track, it brings the tune to another level when the strumming comes in strong towards the end. The character of the track shifts to bring you to an inconclusive ending, a moment to reflect, to take a deep breath and dream. The band bring something a little different to the table with their guitar/electronic hybrid outfit.
Having only formed ten months ago they have already released two other singles, each of which have been well-received. Their performances include well-known events such as XpoNorth this year in the Highland capital, and supporting acts such as Neon Waltz, Man of Moon and Stillhound, their live music career is absolutely snowballing. The duo are made up of Dale and Harry, with some of their main influences coming from Tame Impala, POND, MGMT, Jungle and Empire of the Sun. The guys say they started out writing longer, psy-dance tracks, that eventually shrunk to shorter 4 minute pieces and their music is continually developing.
The Dundee based outfit will continue to gig this summer at Gig in the Car Park, 2018, Saint Luke’s All Dayer and Kilmarnock’s Dirty Weekender at venues across the country. Given their early successes I would expect to see big things coming from the guys in the near future. They continue to confirm that Scotland is home to some of the best emerging and established talent in the country.
