INTERVIEW | THE SANDEMANS

I recently caught up with Sean from Perth band The Sandemans for a wee chat! How would you sum up your 2018? 2018 went very well for us and was the year that we noticed people really began to talk about us, we’d managed to play at so many good events and venues such as the 02 ABC2 and other places in less than a year of gigging. Plans for 2019? For this year we have quite a few announcements to come regarding gigs and we’re just hoping really to take the next step especially after a brilliant year last year. Any new music in the pipeline? We’re just actually just about to start working on new music at The Magic Box in Dundee and will be releasing some this year. What are your influences for song writing? For me personally I get influence for songwriting lyrically from things that are going on just now in life and things that are happening sort of around us and I like to refer to certain things here and there without being direct, however musically I’m trying to write things that sound different and recently been taking influence from certain acts and one main one recently has been the Sleaford Mods. Thoughts on the Scottish Music Scene? I think for the music scene in Scotland is looking promising at the moment, there are plenty upcoming young bands that we’ve played on the bill with and some of the music that is there is brilliant but sadly just not all been discovered yet. Favourite Scottish bands or artists? My favourite Scottish bands would be Monocasters, Real Life Entertainment and Parliamo, we get on really well with each of them and they all just have their own unique sound which some bands can really lack in. If you could cover a song, what would it be and why? I’m not sure if there are any songs that I’d really badly want to cover, recently in our sets we’ve been doing a stripped down version of Bittersweet Symphony which always goes down well so doing that as a cover is always something I look forward to. What's the most bizarre thing to happen while you were onstage? One of the most bizarre things to happen on stage to us for me was definitely at our first headline when we got to ‘Looking For Love’ and the the crowd all just invaded the stage and we ended up somehow having the lead singer of the support acting singing it for us instead basically, I’ve got a video somewhere and it’s horrible. If you only had one album to listen to, what would it be? If I had one album to listen to it would be The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust by David Bowie, unreal album that I don’t think I could ever get bored of. What is your guilty pleasure song?   Smooth Criminal If you had your own festival, who would be your 3 headliners? If I had my own festival, my 3, headliners would be Suede, Kasabian and DMA’s
