INTERVIEW | Devon @ G2 Garage 22/12/18

Writer's picture: Cameron AdieCameron Adie

I got to catch up with Devon after performing as warm-up for Mark Sharp and the Bicycle Thieves at G2 Garage. Unfortunately, due to some technical issues this is not the exact interview, but I did manage to follow up with the same questions later with Devon and here’s what he had to say.

Q: You've played Scotland quite a few times now how does a Scottish crowd compare to an English crowd?

A: Scottish crowds are awesome because there always up for. The music scene is so strong around here. Great to see so many artists and bands getting the support they need from the grass roots and growing into huge acts! We're glad to be accepted into the scene there with open arms.

Q: Is there a specific gig/place in Scotland you would want to go back to?

A: Glasgow definitely! Would love to come back and play some of the other cool festivals that they have here like TRNSMT and would love to play Tenement Trail again. The fact that Nice ‘N Sleazy can be full to back of people at like 1 o'clock for music they haven't even heard before, from a place no one has ever heard of is awesome to me! Just lots of people with open minds which you don't get back home (as much).

Q: What would you say has been the highlight of your year (2018)?

A: The best moment of the year for me was playing Dot to Dot festival in Bristol and filling out a 400-capacity room. Infact that whole festival surprised us all to be honest. We all thought no one would turn up but that day was something really special.

Q: Who was your musical inspiration growing up?

A: Growing up my musical inspiration was probably Elvis. He’s the earliest memories I have of music. I would Just stick a CD in the player, dress up and my sister would put loads of gel in my hair. I used to invite my nan and grandad up to our house and do shows for them (just singing along to the CD with a plastic guitar).

Q: So, your manager is obviously Scottish, and you play Scotland fairly regularly, so do you keep up with the Scottish scene much? And if so, who is your favourite artist?

A: Favourite act in Scotland at the moment? Probably The Dunts, Pleasure Heads and Beta Waves all good lads and doing really well!

Q: Where does your ideas come from regarding your music and vibrant hair colour?

A: The ideas come from experiences, they could come from just a beat or a melody I do on an instrument or even just on my laptop or maybe even a song title that I think sounds cool haha. And the hair I don't even know I just love colour and always wanted to try it.

Q: Is there something you specifically want to focus on in the new year, what can we expect?

A: Yeah, I want to focus on writing and recording. Getting a few singles out! Also, really trying to grow the fanbase. As well as that I hope to be doing a couple of festivals and a lot of gigs/tours. I also have a collaboration project with Noah Booth of Ratboy which we were working on this year for him.

Q: Finally, if you could have your own festival who would your 3 headliners be? (Can be dead or alive)

A: Probably Elvis, Twenty-one pilots and Michael Jackson...and Jake Paul ;)

Massive thanks to Devon for giving me a chance to have a sit down and also for helping me out with the technical issues.
