INTERVIEW | BROWNBEAR

Writer's picture: Martin LowMartin Low

In the build up to their headline gig at King Tuts at the end of the month, I caught up with Matt for a chat! How would you sum up your 2018? It started with not much happening then we released our debut album and toured it and the response was good. We ended the year with our biggest show to date at Oran Mor in Glasgow and it was overwhelming. Folk were singing back every word. It really felt like the graft of the last few years was started to pay off!! Plans for 2019? As for 2019, we have a show at King Tuts on March 28th for BBC Introducing then I am off on a short run of solo shows. Other than that hopefully some festivals but the big thing for us is to

start work on album number 2. So yeah, hopefully some new material before the year ends! What are your influences for song writing? Influences for writing vary with where you are at in life I think but yeah still life really. Relationships and the failure of them... nightmare! Thoughts on the Scottish music scene? The Scottish music scene is booming right now. So glad to see some punk bands with a bit of swag knocking it out the park like Rascalton & Heavy Rapids. So many great new names like Deni Smith & Luke La Volpe. Some names that have been about for a while that I think will really find their stride this year billy Mitchell & Carly Connor. Vukovi are back as well! Just so many genres. We have it all up here and it is magical!  Favourite Scottish bands or artists? All of the above. Neon waltz too. Vida are doing great. Love St martiins as well. Just too many to choose from. It’s happening up here at the moment! Someone give these acts more of a voice outside of Scotland. We need the bigger festivals to start sticking out for local acts as well.  If you could cover a song, what would it be and why? “Can’t take my eyes off of you” and I do it at solo shows from time to time. What a tune!! So well written and actually has so many parts to it. It’s deceptively simple sounding but actually both lyrically and musically genius. I Mean imagine writing that? Tune! What is the most bizarre thing to happen to you on stage? Hmmm...Good question. I was playing a show in Leven of all places once when I was doing the acoustic shows and my pal came along, got steaming and decided the best time to continue our conversation was on stage. She came on and just started talking to me mid tune & the audience kinda had to live through our catch up for a bit. 10/10. If you had only one album to listen to for the rest of your life, what would it be? Ahhh that’s a horrible question! Maybe London calling? Rumours? Thriller? Songs in the key of life? To Pimp a Butterfly? That’s hard so I am going to just use this question to big up my man Kyle

Falconer! “No Thank you” Get it listened to! What is your guilty pleasure song? There are no guilty pleasures just tunes. Tunes for days and folk who are to cool to admit they are tunes. If you had your own festival, who would be your three headliners? Loving these questions! Right it would be something like  Friday - Kendrick Lamar ( then get childish Gambino, NERD, NaS etc on the bill) hipHop Friday.

Saturday - a big hitter like Foo Fighters or The Libertines. Then get indie & rock bands on the go. Have a stage with all the best Scottish bands too so they can benefit off the big names! Saturday rock & Indie

Sunday - Paul Simon, then fill it with more heritage acts. Maybe get it full of Motown, R& B & Soul acts?

It would be something for everyone and full of tunes! You need tunes to get on the bill. No gimmicks please!
