I caught up with Harry, who is one half of one of Scotland's favourite duo's, for a wee chat!
How would you sum up your 2018?
Great! We came out of nowhere a little bit and spent 2019 playing as much as possible all over Scotland, looking back though although it was pretty public we gave ourselves a chance to figure out what works for us and what doesn’t. Some of the early shows were a bit of a headache in hindsight so we had to learn quickly on the fly. Much of 2018 was experimentation, finding our sound and ultimately writing all of our songs as we went along.
Plans for 2019?
2018 went so quick, sometimes it was million miles an hour so we slowed down a bit in early 2019 to regroup and take stock but we can’t wait to head out on the TTV discover tour starting on 5th April and get back into it. This will be our first shows outside of Scotland so were really excited to get out and see some new faces on the road. You look at things like streaming numbers and see numbers from all over the UK but its different pitching up in peoples towns and looking them in the eye! These will help take the band onto the next step in our journey though and It’s all about building yourself from the ground, up. Song by song, show by show.
Any new music in the pipeline?
We spent a bit of time down at Parr Street studios in January recording a few tracks with a cool dude called Rich Turvey who has worked with the likes of Blossoms. We were really happy with the whole experience and more importantly the tracks we came out with! Still piecing together release plans but Discovery will be the first to know (and mibbe get a wee sneak peak).
We have been working on a few remixes recently as well for some cool acts so they shouldn’t be far away.
What are your influences for song writing?
That’s quite a hard one to answer because we tend to write separately before coming together and grinding it out. Dales now based in London and I'm here in Dundee which has its pros and cons, both of us are constantly writing and sharing with each other so at the moment it’s a bit of a collaborative process. We have a busy dropbox. We’ll maybe shake the writing process up later on in the year but right now this is what works for us.
Thoughts on the Scottish Music Scene?
The standard of musicianship in Scotland has always been high but now more than ever there are so many good up-and-coming bands it’s hard to keep tabs on them all, close your eyes for a minute and another one pops up.
Favourite Scottish bands or artists?
We’re both big fans of Walt disco. We’re playing with them a few times next month on the TTV discover tour and can’t wait to hear the new singles live. We also love Man Of Moon who just released an amazing EP, if anyone gets a chance to go see them then you should!
If you could cover a song, what would it be and why?
Slow by Kylie. Huge Fans.
What's the most bizarre thing to happen while you were onstage?
We’ve been quite lucky on that front believe it or not! However last year’s live set up failing at least once during a show could be considered bizarre though! We styled through it though as always and this upcoming tour will be a whole new Beta Waves.
If you only had one album to listen to, what would it be?
Stankonia by OutKast
What is your guilty pleasure song?
I really like you - Carly Rae jepsen. Got tickets to see her in May...
If you had your own festival, who would be your 3 headliners?
Childish Gambino, Tame Impala, Solange (and/or BETA WAVES)
