REVIEW: KT Tunstall @ Liquid Rooms, Edinburgh | 28th September 2018

Updated: Sep 21, 2019

So that's another one ticked off the gig bucket list.KT Tunstall is someone I have wanted to see live for so long now if you couldny tell from the actual straw I had up her arse in my preview to this gig.

However, before I chat about the gig I'd like to give a shoutout to the lassie who accused me of pick-pocketing, cheers for that. Then the woman who gave my pal grief for me trying to get picture for the article, ram it mate just trying to do my job. Rant over.

KT and her FULL FEMALE band came out with a set that mixed both old and new tracks from first album 'Eye to the Telescope' released in 2005 to tracks from new upcoming album 'WAX' released October 2018 and a bit of everything in between of course.

There really is NOTHING that woman canny do with a loop pedal and there's something really cool about watching each layer of a song being built right in front of you. And when it's being built into 'Black Horse and a Cherry Tree' mixed into 'Seven Nation Army' with nothing less than a fucking backing kazoo, it's even better.

The way she can hold an audience is pretty impressive too, with witty comments and stories between songs. None of this 'Edinburgh are we all having a good night?' crap, she was making light of how death and divorce in her life made for great material and a quick chant of 'Fife for life.'

She played a stripped back, stunning version of 'Feel It All' from 2013 album 'Invisible Empire' with the audience echoing her harmonies. This song stuck out to me as an example of how amazing her raw vocals are isolated without the layers of instruments, nothing flashy or fancy just really fucking good.

The new album 'WAX ' featured in the set, it is the second in a trilogy of albums with 'KIN' representing the mind, 'WAX ' the body and the unwritten album the spirit ( the coolest fucking concept for an album trilogy EVER). As for the new tracks from new album, 'The River' stuck out as a highlight track live. The single has been out for a few weeks now and the more I listen to it the more I love it and it definitely achieves her goal of conveying the energy of a live performance into the recording.

This wee acoustic cover of 'The River' is worth a listen:

'The Night Bowie Died' was another wee teaser of what's to come in the album with an ode to the man himself by incorporating a few verses of classic 'Heroes.'

I canny wait to listen the full album when it comes out and will be trying to get my hands on tickets for her Fife appearance in the album tour. I also can't truly tick it off the list until I see 'If Only' live until then I'll just have to keep buying tickets and something tells me she won't be going away anytime soon. A consistent artist career in the music industry these days is a dying memory much like 10p freddos but she isn't going anywhere.

Just as I finished this review she put out a wee Facebook live which is still available to watch so will stick a link below. The day that it becomes acceptable to say cunt on national tv she will have her own T.V show I'm telling you now.
