In a first for Discovery Music’s explorations in showcasing the best local musical talent at the moment, this review will feature the work of a local collective/record label who are quickly establishing themselves in the electronic music scene at the moment for very good reason.

Hilltown Disco are a Dundee based electronic music collective who are gaining a reputation in the electronic scene at the moment with real momentum which is set to expand further with the release of their latest work, HIL004. The collective is headed by local DJ, Ben Rothes alongside Stephen Malloch (Malloch), Gary Mitchell (Treb), Matt Laidler (Matt HDC) and Jace Bryan (J Wax). Hilltown Disco’s first vinyl release came earlier in the year in the form of HIL003 featuring Crossmods, Edmundy and J Wax. Having bought HIL003 myself already, it is clear that Hilltown Disco’s infectious displays of all things electro, acid, house and techno are exhilirating, adventurous and almost inimitable compared to others emerging on the scene at the moment. HIL004, their latest release which has earned them a distribution deal with new London based record label/distributer Lobster Records, is a bold, captivating follow-up from Hilltown Disco that delivers on many fronts.

Featuring a return from Crossmods alongside Chris Moss Acid, Dundee based producer Ansata and Crossover Newtork, HIL004 showcases the collective’s house, techno and acid explorations with flair. Opening with the Crossmods track “Deila’s Dream”, atmospheric synths and electro vocals portray an idyllic scene before quickly transcending to the following Datawave remix of the same track which steps things up a gear with the introduction of driving drum-machine rhythms offering a more house orientated variation to the opener.

Flipping over to the B-side introduces Bournemouth based acid/electro artist, Chris Moss Acid. His re-mastered rendition of “The Mossquito” shows a scintillatingly-frantic yet empowering blast of his abilities as a producer in the acid genre which, in turn, explains for itself why Chris Moss Acid has already featured on a variety of different renowned electronic record labels around the globe.

Dundee based producer Ansata (a familiar name with Hilltown Disco having previously featured on HIL001) contributes with the track “Forth Gear” next which provides a suitably energetic follow up to “The Mossquito” keeping the acid feel throughout before finally concluding with Crossover Network’s “Dancefloor Deviation” rounding off HIL004 with old-school electro vibes throughout the high energy track.

The selection of tracks that have come together to form HIL004 evidently show vigour, diversity and real talent throughout to form a well-balanced, charismatic collective work which shows that the future ahead for Hilltown Disco is undoubtedly a conceivably bright and prosperous one. In addition, the work of other Scottish electronic record labels such as Craigie Knowes and West End Communications are also on a seemingly transcendent path to growth and prosperity in the electronic scene at the moment. The three labels held a showcase event together back in August at Dundee’s Reading Rooms to great success showing a real sense of togetherness for the benefit of the electronic music scene as a whole in Scotland which can be really hard to come across in other music genres.

HIL004 is available to buy now online by clicking here or alternatively at Le Freak Records, 159 Perth Road, Dundee.

To catch Hilltown Disco in action, look no further than Friday 12th October as they hold their launch party for HIL004 at The Reading Rooms, Dundee. This is not to be missed. Event link here.
