EP Review | Sceadu - Once Upon A Future

The newest release from Glasgow based label Bricolage is this dystopian feeling EP from Sceadu. ‘Once Upon A Future’ is a dreamily dark compilation of mind unearthing track that bend through time and space to create distain and wonder all at the same time.

The first track ‘Embryo’ very much feels like something at the beginning of its life. It’s an opening of sounds and frequency boundaries that meander through some weird but wonderful sound samples. It has a sense of somewhere baron, as it builds the sounds crash over one another in an in-sync syncopation, like an awakening of worlds.

While ‘Cyberia’ is much more structured. It builds suspense from the opening, leaving you hanging on a repeated hi-hat pattern that pounds along under an intriguing, moaning overtone. It waves in and out like a stream of consciousness. Gradually, layers are added, little snare snaps bring a sense of almost free falling through time. Then some drum and bass-esque rolls topple in and out of this winding existence. Next comes a creature like feature. It’s almost like the breath of something pretty sinister. But then the beat drops, picking up the pace as we head towards the end of the track.

There’s nothing predictable or dull about this EP and ‘Escape Pod’ doesn’t disappoint on that front either. Like the dark party has just begun. Bouncing in and around some sick beats this track solidifies its predecessors into something tangible and danceable. It’s still as trippy as the others but takes on a new form. The energy is illuminating. The swelling sustained notes are supercharged with greatness. This one brings the whole EP back into balance.

The short but intense journey ends with a stormy start in ‘Imaginary Reign’. Rain is the dominant sample during this intro in which you begin to be transported to a higher plane. It’s almost soothing in the way the track feels sparse. It provides space for your inner drum and bass desires to take a rest and contemplate the unknown world out there. It’s less eerie than the rest and shines a light on the extent of the talent on offer from Sceadu.

The EP was released on the 11th this month. You can find it at the links below along with other tried and tested Bricolage favourites.
