With their electric rock and heavy beats,Chinese Disco’s newest release is bound to make a lasting impression on new listeners. Martin Logan and Craig Cantile are the faces of this creative duo and having recently played at "The Lemon Tree" in Aberdeen, Chinese Disco are a setting themselves apart from the crowd with their debut EP Formula 1. The pair are from Elgin in Northern Scotland, and with this introductory EP, the distinctive, electric beat of Chinese Disco is on show for the world to hear.
Do It is the first track on the EP and definitely grew on me the most, making a lasting impression of their musical aesthetic. There is a real flow to Formula 1 and as an introductory piece, Do It was perfect for coaxing new listeners. The more I listen to the vocal vibrations, the more addictive the song became and really compliments the 80’s retro vibe they’re honing.
Paris 92 then led my imagination to Cyberpunk, which might be completely different to the sound it’s trying to uphold here. However, I can’t help but link the guitar solo to a racing action sci-fi. The fast-paced beat with the slow, low voice creates a great contrast – a device that Chinese Disco continue throughout the EP. It is a song you need to listen to for yourself because with this, my mind runs wild to the electric flow.
The mechanical sound of Big Fuck creates the pinnacle point of Formula 1. Primarily sporting a rock sound, this single proves to be the most distinct song of the whole EP. Detailing and questioning obsessive fantasies, Big Fuck is another standout because of the strong baseline and explosive chorus. The sounds really gel together well, and the synthesis combined with the guitar bring two ideas to one song in a collision of rock and electric.
Finally, we have my favourite piece on the EP. It brings to life the familiar retro-gaming feel and resonates to their race car aesthetic. Even the title which, apart from Big Fuck, stood out to me when I first listened. Horizon Master wraps up the essence of Chinese Disco whilst leaving us wanting just that little bit more. Immediately there is a powerful intro and the build up to a short lyrical section which gives this song the right amount of clarity and control. Perhaps it is the repetition here but having a steady beat whilst introducing new sounds is really a strong point for Chinese Disco. It almost acts to diminish the flame after a climactic series of songs throughout the EP and settles it to a fitting end. That doesn’t mean it loses any energy however, I see Horizon Master as the perfect denouement to a high-impact series of songs. If you keep this song on repeat, it sounds great looped to Do It for a second round of joyriding!
